March 10, 2021—Tesla has been teasing its automated features as "self-driving" to drivers, but recently admitted to the California Department of Motor Vehicles that its systems are not actually self-driving.

According to the LA Times, in official correspondence with California's DMV, lawyers for Tesla admitted the vehicles are not self-driving, even those outfitted with the $10,000 option for "Full Self-Driving Capability."

"Currently neither Autopilot nor FSD Capability is an autonomous system," Eric Williams, Tesla's attorney, said in a letter to the DMV. But Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, continues to tweet telling consumers self-driving is just around the corner.
