Oct. 8, 2020—Well-known automaker Volvo has received a patent for its movable steering wheel that could aid in the production of autonomous vehicles.

The steering wheel sits on a rail and can move the width of the vehicle, reports The Detroit Bureau. The movable steering wheel will help in production by reducing the need for separate engineering on American-made vehicles and those for Great Britain, Australia or Japan.

When it comes to autonomous vehicles, if the human driver wishes to engage in autonomous mode, they could easily move the steering wheel to create more room for reading or relaxing.
