Aug. 21, 2020—The United Kingdom Department for Transport announced a new consultation in partnership with the Center for Connected Autonomous Vehicles that aims to bring autonomous vehicles to UK roadways by 2021.

The aim of the research is to shape how autonomous vehicles could potentially operate on British roadways. According to ZD Net, the national speed limit on British motorways is 70 mph and as a result, they plan to focus part of the conversation on the Automated Lane Keeping System and how that could perform autonomously at such high speeds.

The consultation will be ongoing, the projected stop date is October 27. The next step will be to release the evidence gathered and propose changes for hands-free driving.
