Russian Tech Company Comes to...Michigan?

Aug. 19, 2020—Yandex, a Russian tech company, plans to use Ann Arbor, Mich., to test its autonomous car technology. Yandex is planning to develop a self-driving car for the U.S. market in the coming years.

The company choosing Ann Arbor does not come as a total shock as it is one of the few locations in the world that allows self-driving cars to operate without a human in the driver's seat. Before Ann Arbor, the company had carried out self-driving tests in Las Vegas and was planning to go to Detroit next, but the pandemic put its plans on hold.

According to Automotive Testing Technology International, Yandex is known for its ridesharing services in Moscow and Innopolis and even has a testing footprint in Tel Aviv. Its latest jump to the U.S. is no doubt a part of the larger goal—to release a self-driving car in North America.
