Aug. 5, 2020—Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD) has created an HD mapping system for autonomous vehicles. The map information was gathered via ordinary vehicles with dashboard camera accessories and satellites, according to Autonomous Vehicle International.

Toyota's open Automated Mapping Platform allows companies to create and share high-precision maps and share data on automated-driving vehicles.

The hope is that more detailed maps can lessen positional errors in autonomous vehicles, creating a safer roadway for drivers, passengers, and vehicles.
