July 31, 2020—Porsche is working with machine tool producer, TRUMPF, and automotive parts company, MAHLE, to 3D print pistons.

According to 3D Printing Industry, the group is using Laser Metal Fusion 3D printing to craft pistons for the engine of Porsche's flagship 911 supercar.

The 3D-printed pistons are lighter and can increase engine speed, lower the temperature load on the pistons, and optimize combustion. 3D printing car parts could be the new frontier as they allow automakers to create lighter-weight parts with just as much longevity.

Testing remains ongoing as Porsche decides whether or not to fit commercial vehicles with 3D-printed parts.
