July 15, 2020—Nissan announced that 12 of their models now have the Rear Door Alert system. The system uses internal displays as well as horn honks to alert the driver when they may be forgetting precious cargo in the backseat, reports Slash Gear

The idea behind the RDA system is to prevent people from forgetting small children and pets in the back of the vehicle, especially during the summer months this simple mistake can be fatal.

Nissan's most affordable models such as the Versa, Sentra and Kicks, have been equipped with this technology. Nissan hopes to have the feature available in all four-door trucks, sedans, and SUVs by 2022, and in each of their models by 2025.
