Cruise Debuts Production Ready Electric, Driverless Car

Order Reprints

Jan. 23, 2020—Cruise has unveiled an electric, driverless car that is production ready, reported TechCrunch.

The Origin is a shuttle-like vehicle that has no steering wheel or pedals. It's designed to travel at highway speeds.

However, the Origin will not be on public roads anytime soon. The driverless vehicle doesn’t meet U.S. federal regulations known as FMVSS, which specify design, construction, performance and durability requirements for motor vehicles. The Origin will be used on private, closed environments such as GM facilities in Michigan or even Honda’s campus outside of the U.S.
