June 23, 2020—Apple is releasing a smartphone tool called Car Key, which is a digital version of what the name suggests.

The Car Key is part of the iPhone's newest operating system software and will initially be available for the 2021 BMW 5 Series, reports The Verge. Users pair their phone with the vehicle and unlock it when they're within range. Facial recognition or touch ID are used to verify the unlocking. This version of Car Key uses NFC, a short-range communication, to work.

As The Verge points out, this software is different from previous smartphone unlocking features because it's not an app. It's part of the phone's operating system. That means that it could hypothetically be paired with any vehicle that has the software to support and pair with Car Key. It's kind of like how most cars now can pair via Bluetooth.
