May 12, 2020—The Shanghai Municipal Government announced a plan to start create a smart city with charging ports, Internet-of-Vehicle roadways and 5G base stations, reported Electrek.

The smart city plan includes adding 100,000 charging ports and 34,500 5G base stations. The charging ports double as devices that collect data.

The approach would use big data, artificial intelligence and smart-energy infrastructure.

Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst at Navigant Research  told Electrek that data gathered from chargers is vital for vehicle-to-grid integration and standards that enable "roaming" across multiple charging networks.
