BMW Reports Building an AV is Challenging

April 14, 2020—BMW told Digital Trends that designing an autonomous car is challenging because the designers not only have to preserve 92 years of vehicle building history but also adapt to new technologies including electrification and computer-aided driving.

BMW's head of design said in the report that the sensors needed for autonomous driving have a bigger influence on the design process. The sensors needed to power a level four vehicle on the automation scale is multiplied by two or three from level 3.

The automaker's production of the electric iNext concept is expected to make its debut before the end of 2020 and engineers will use it as a test-mule for level four technology.
