Dec. 2, 2022—Dutch automaker Lightyear will begin production on a solar-powered sedan.

Jalopnik reports that around 150 people have preordered the vehicle at a cost of $259,000 apiece. The model is called the Lightyear O, and about 1,000 will be produced.

Reports are that the car can drive for a while without charging, but regionality and weather are important factors. The car can make it two months in Amsterdam during the summer, deriving power directly from the sun. That length is seven months in Portugal. Less sun means more of a reliance on a standard battery charging power source.
