April 7, 2020—The U.S. Vehicle Data Access Coalition recently urged Congress to take a lead role in establishing standards for open data access for vehicles for all data generated, collected and stored by vehicles. The coalition comprises a voluntary group of consumer protection and privacy advocates, vehicle fleet owners, vehicle equipment suppliers, distributors and repair facilities, insurers and more.

Bob Redding, Washington, D.C., representative for the Automotive Service Association (ASA), expands upon an earlier ADAPT story on vehicle data access laws in this week's podcast.

The Obama and Trump administrations have issued guidelines on on many new vehicle technologies and defining state and federal responsibilities, but but so far, they have not addressed vehicle data access concerns for independent repairers.

Redding outlines the consequences for the repairer of having no legislature on vehicle data access.
