Aug. 3, 2022—Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin have agreed to join Michigan's effort to install EV chargers around Lake Michigan.

The agreement signed by the four states says they will work together to develop and facilitate a plan to make "a scenic route with reliable light-duty vehicle charging" along the Lake Michigan coast. According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the plan is to turn the 1,100 miles of roadway around the coast into "an electric Route 66."

“Today, Michigan is proud to lead the Lake Michigan Electric Vehicle Circuit Tour, a partnership between fellow Midwestern states to grow our economy, create more good-paying jobs, and lead the future of mobility and electrification," Whitmer said in a news release. “With this announcement, we are putting the country on notice that the Midwest is the place to be for clean energy and small business growth. The circuit will allow travelers to experience Lake Michigan and visit countless communities in and around the route."

Per the news release, most of the chargers should be installed over the next several years.
