May 17, 2022—Nissan is currently weighing internally the possibility of building a new electric vehicle plant in the United States.
According to a report from The Detroit News, Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta told a group of reporters "it may not be a surprise" if the automaker decides to build a third manufacturing facility sometime in the near future.
The company's plant in Canton, Mississippi, currently produces the Titan pickup and Altima sedans, and its Smyrna, Tennessee, facility makes the Leaf electric vehicle among other models. Nissan does not currently have a dedicated EV facility in the U.S.
Gupta didn't specify when, or if, there would be a decision on the new plant, though per the Detroit News story he did tell reporters "its realization would be some years down the road."
