March 30, 2022—Toyota and autonomous driving system developer Aurora earlier this month began testing a driverless ridesharing service in Texas.

According to a report from Reuters, the companies have installed Aurora's self-driving system onto Toyota Sienna minivans and are testing the vehicles on highways and streets in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

"The route showcases Aurora's ability to safely operate at highway speeds, a key technical differentiator that allows it to prioritize popular and lucrative rides," the U.S. company said in a statement.

The current routes have two safety operators in the vehicles and no passengers. The report did not say when the companies expect to begin offering free, and eventually paid, rides to customers.
