March 16, 2022—Panasonic is in the preliminary planning stage to build a U.S. factory that would supply EV manufacturers with next-gen lithium-ion batteries.

Panasonic is a longtime battery supplier for Tesla according to a report from The Detroit News, and the company is currently looking at locations in Oklahoma and Kansas. Citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the report says the plant could begin operation as soon as 2024.

Per those sources, Panasonic plans to make "bigger and more powerful '4680 batteries," a technology that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said is "the key to unlocking $25,000 Teslas." The larger volume of the battery would require fewer cells and related parts.
