DMC Bringing Back DeLorean as an EV

Feb. 28, 2022—The DeLorean Motor Company is bringing back its legendary DMC DeLorean as an electric vehicle later this year.

DeLorean Motors Reimagined, which is majority owned by DMC, will unveil a new battery-electric version of its classic two-door sports car at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August. The company hasn't revealed too many details about the reimagined DeLorean, though a report from Car and Driver says the vehicle will have a range north of 300 miles and will source the powertrain from "external sources."

The original DeLorean was only sold from 1981-1983. Though it became a pop culture icon when it was used as the time machine in 1985's "Back to the Future" and still stands out as a one-of-a-kind vehicle, it was a woefully underpowered car and didn't impress on the road.

DeLorean Motors Reimagined says not to expect that aspect to carry over to its new iteration; CEO Joost de Vries says the car won't be a "hypercar," but it will be aimed toward "people who want to drive."
