Jan. 11, 2022—Massachusetts-based Battery Resourcers on Wednesday announced it will build a lithium ion battery recycling plant in Georgia.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the company will build its $43-million-facility in suburban Atlanta and will hire 150 people to operate it. No timeline was provided on when the plant could be completed.

The move comes as a bit of a gamble on the state of the battery supply chain, which according to the report is currently concentrated in Asia but is primed to spread out to other regions.

“Automotive manufacturers are sitting on mountains of discarded batteries and scrap, and right now they have very few options for responsible and cost-effective disposal,” Battery Resourcers CEO Michael O’Kronley said in a statement.

The company says its methods of recycling can recover more than 97 percent of key materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese while producing no toxic waste, resulting in a material that outperforms newly mined metals.
