Dec. 20, 2021—General Motors on Thursday announced the CEO of its Cruise autonomous vehicle branch, Dan Ammann, is leaving the company.

The unexpected move comes as GM says it plans to "accelerate a strategy" the company laid out earlier this year with Cruise leading its AV platform, according to a report from CNBC.

Cruise President and CTO Kyle Vogt will take over as interim CEO effective immediately. Vogt is a co-founder of Cruise and previously served as CEO.

According to the report, Ammann is credited with GM's 2016 acquisition of Cruise. He was named CEO of the branch in late 2018.
