Sept. 9, 2021—Hyundai Motor Group is hoping to develop an affordable hydrogen fuel cell within the next decade.

The company on Tuesday announced it plans to “achieve a fuel cell vehicle price point comparable to a battery electric vehicle by 2030,” according to CNBC. Hyundai officials also added during the announcement it plans to have hydrogen fuel cells in all of its commercial vehicles by 2028.

The next generation fuel cell system would offer 100 kilowatt and 200 kilowatt variants “with costs being lowered by more than 50%, total package volume reduced by 30% and power output doubled," according to the South Korean automaker.

Despite optimism for hydrogen as an alternative fuel source, the CNBC report cites "a number of hurdles the technology needs to overcome if they are to develop into a mainstream option for drivers," such as a lack of infrastructure to produce and distribute hydrogen on a global scale.
