Sept. 1, 2021—The future of Ford's flagship muscle car continues to lean heavily on electricity.

According to a report from CNET via Automotive News, Ford Motor Co. plans to add a next-generation Mustang hybrid in 2025. The company informed dealers of the addition during a meeting in Dallas last week.

The report says the hybrid will still closely resemble the classic muscle car, but a "fresh design and an eight-year-long model cycle" are expected. Ford executives declined comment.

"The future's wide open," the report said. "Before (a fully electric model), a hybridized Mustang could inch fans and buyers into the electrified life, and probably boost power from the car in the process."
