Aug. 31, 2021—A Tesla driving in autopilot mode an into a Florida High Patrol cruiser near Orlando over the weekend, narrowly missing the trooper who had pulled over to help a stranded motorist.

According to a report from The Detroit News, the Tesla hit the cruiser's left side just before 5 a.m. Saturday on an interstate near Orlando before colliding with the other vehicle. The trooper was uninjured, and the drivers of both the Tesla and the other vehicle only sustained minor injuries.

The accident is the latest in a concerning trend of Tesla vehicles hitting emergency vehicles while autopilot is engaged. The NHTSA opened a probe into the manufacturer earlier this month after tallying 11 crashes since 2018 in which a Tesla on autopilot hit an emergency vehicle with its lights on. In those crashes, 17 people have been injured and one has been killed, according to the report.
