August 5, 2021—Autonomous vehicle developer Argo AI recently obtained a permit from the California Public Utilities Commission that allows the company to offer public rides in its vehicles.

According to the permit, the Pittsburgh-based manufacturer must offer the rides at no cost to the passenger and the vehicle must have a driver in the driver's seat in case of emergency, according to a report from WPXI Pittsburgh.

“It’s a great step in our ability to further expand operations capability in CA, by enabling us to offer rides to partners and other key stakeholders to gain feedback on our efforts,” Argo AI spokesman Alan Hall said.

The permit is part of a larger effort by California's Drivered Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service Pilot program to improve research and development around AVs.
