Ford Patenting Tow-Behind EV Charging

July 20, 2021—A recently published patent filed by Ford in late 2020 suggests charging electric cars by towing them behind another vehicle.

According to a report from The Drive, the patent describes several ways of charging an EV while towing it, but most would operate through a Bluetooth or internet connection. The most practical option, according to the report, would be to have an EV hooked up to a vehicle such as an RV and to have the driver set the parameters of when the vehicle would charge so "there would be no extra load on the engine of the tow vehicle, but extra charge would still be gained."

The report suggests the patent "is seemingly endless in its scope," though no timeline of when the tech could be implemented was given.
