July 12, 2021—Electric vehicle drivers in Virginia now have an easy method  of finding charging stations near them available right on their phones.

According to a report from CBS 19 Charlottesville, the Virginia Department of Transportation on Thursday announced a new feature on its 511 Virginia website and mobile app will show drivers the name, address, connection type and other information about every registered charging station near them. All data on the stations is sourced from the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center.

The new database cost just under $30,000 to develop and implement.

"Electric cars are becoming more and more popular every day," VDOT spokesman Scott Cowherd said. "We felt like this was the time to put it out because of the summer, so we felt like it would be the perfect time for that."
