The Hongguang Mini, a small Chinese electric vehicle

June 8, 2021—Have you heard of the Hongguang Mini, a stripped-down EV of which nearly 300,000 have been sold in China nine months after its release?

Maybe not, though, as detailed in an Aljazeera report, it might be time to take notice, as the vehicle, made by SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. (made up of China-backed companies SAIC Motor Corp., and Guangxi Automobile Group Co., alongside the more familiar General Motors), is outselling Tesla in China.

The Hongguang Mini starts at $4,500, with 270,000 models sold since it hit the streets in July 2020. SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile is pushing to move 1.2 million Hongguang Minis annually starting in 2022.
