June 3, 2021—With NASA pushing to return astronauts to the moon, a new generation of wheeled lunar vehicles will need to be created to support the space agency's Artemis program.

Taking on the job are General Motors and Lockheed Martin, which, according to a report from Design News, will be making a number of lunar vehicles for the missions.

One of the key design goals for these next-gen rovers, the first of which is dubbed the Lunar Terrain Vehicle, will be to surpass the less than 5-mile range of the design used during the Apollo missions, the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Per the report, GM contributed to the that original space buggy, making its chassis and metal-mesh wheels
