A Waymo autonomous van

May 21, 2021—An Associated Press reporter spent an afternoon driving around Chandler, Ariz., in a Waymo autonomous van, finding the experience strange and at least one point, scary.

Per his story, the AP's Jacques Billeaud was picked up in a Costco parking lot and hailed various Waymo rides around the suburb of Phoenix. Waymo, which is under the umbrella of Google parent company Alphabet, began offering driverless van rides with a 50-square-mile service area in Chandler last fall.

Billeaud writes that the van's automated voice pronounced his first name correctly, he found the vehicle's steering wheel turning by itself "eerie," and that the van made a left turn against traffic that he'd not have chosen to make himself, though he was assured by a Waymo engineer that it had been safe.
