March 29, 2021—Volkswagen has announced its "AI Detroit Unit," which is a research and development effort intended to boost artificial intelligence learning.

“Volkswagen has a tremendous treasure of data. Competencies in Artificial Intelligence will help us leverage this treasure, and in supporting people and business,” said Abdallah Shanti, chief information officer for the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, in a press release.

One use of AI-analyzed data happens at VW's Chattanooga plant. Algorithms help to schedule shifts from 2,000 employees, the release said. The company has also analyzed historical sales data to figure out how best to "position" certain models releases in the consumer market.
